My router isn’t connecting

Common Causes

If you are having trouble getting your router to connect to the internet, there could be several possible causes:

  • Your apartment lost power and your router needs to be rebooted
  • You need to finish the setup process on your router
  • Your router needs to run a firmware or other software update
  • The port your router is connected to is damaged
  • The internet is disabled for your unit

Solutions

Rebooting your router

If your apartment lost power, even if the lights just flickered, your router may need to be rebooted to restore internet service. Unplug the power cord from your router for 10 seconds and then plug it back in. Wait 30-60 seconds for the router to boot back up and then try your connection again.

Finish setting up your router

If you’re connecting to a new router for the first time, make sure that you have fully completed the setup process. Many modern routers will have you download their setup app to complete this process. Follow the setup instructions for your specific router to ensure nothing more needs to be done.

Update your router

Check if your router is running the latest version of its firmware/software. Sometimes a pending update can prevent the router from connecting to your devices. Follow the router manufacturer instructions to update your software and then try the connection again.

Try a new wall port

Occasionally one of the ethernet wall ports in your unit will be damaged. This damage could be visible on the port itself or it could be caused by damage to the wire in the wall. To see if this is the case, try using your router in a different ethernet wall port in your unit.

If the router works from another port, please contact our team to setup a house call to repair the broken port.

Your internet is disabled

If your router is not detecting an internet connection from any of the wall ports in your apartment, it’s possible that your unit has been disabled by your property manager. This could be due to overdue rent, late internet service payments, or a variety of other issues specific to your property manager. Try contact your property manager to ensure that internet service is enabled for your unit.
