I’m getting a NAT error

Problem

Occasionally game consoles or other devices will receive a NAT error. While NAT errors can occur with services like VPNs, we most often see this happen on game consoles like Xbox’s.

fixing a NAT error on Xbox

NAT errors can prevent consoles from connecting to each other. It is important to set your NAT type as Open, otherwise you may be unable to successfully connect with other consoles as this graphic shows:

To set your NAT type, follow these steps:

  1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide.
  2. Select Profile & system > Settings > General > Network settings.
  3. Under Current Network Status, the NAT Type field displays your current NAT type.

You need your NAT type to be Open to resolve this issue. You also want to be sure there are no errors such as Double NAT detected or UPnP not successful displayed.

We recommend checking this Xbox article for more information: https://support.xbox.com/en-US/help/hardware-network/connect-network/xbox-one-nat-error

fixing a double NAT error

If you are experiencing a Double NAT error on your game console, we recommend trying to connect your game console directly to the ethernet wall port in your apartment. If you have another device, such as a router already connected to the port, you can use an ethernet switch to extend the amount of available ports:

Option 1 – Connect Directly

Directly connect your game console to an open Ethernet wall port in your apartment using a standard ethernet cable. Be sure the wifi is then disabled on your console. This will provide a stable connection and should resolve any double NAT errors.

Option 2 – Use an ethernet switch

If all of your wall ports are occupied with other devices, you can connect a switch to extend your available ports:

  1. Disconnect your router or other device from the wall port.
  2. Connect an ethernet switch to the wall port with a standard ethernet cable. One end of the cable will be plugged into the wall, while the other end can be plugged into any of the numbered ports on the switch.
  3. Connect your router, game console, and any other devices to the open ethernet ports on the switch.

Your connection should look like this when completed:
